MySpace Still Gets 50 Million Monthly Visitors

Posted on January 16, 2015

MySpace is no longer one of the top social network destinations but it is still generating a large amount of traffic. An interesting article in the Wall Street Journal says the site gets 50 million monthly visitors. MySpace also generated over 300 million video views in November.

The site was picked up fairly cheaply in June 2011 by Specific Media for about $35 million. This was after News Corp. paid $580 million for it in 2005.

Today, the social network giant now has a strong music slant. A search on the site brings up results that include songs, videos, artists, albums and people as well as a people result.

MySpace still has lots of photos from old users on the site. The WSJ story says at least some of MySpace's traffic is people coming back to look at their photographs from the mid-2000s. MySpace does sometime send out emails to remind people of these photographs. Thursday is a popular day for the site because this is the day most people come to look at their old photos. These may be because they are sharing "Throwback Thursday" photos on Twitter or Instagram.

The Wall Street Journal story says MySpace has a staggering one billion register users, which includes 465 million U.S. email addresses. This gives you an idea of how huge MySpace once was. Many of these emails are probably no longer being used by their owners, but if MySpace can find a way to get some of these former users - such as its Thursday old photo seekers - to return permanently they could see even greater growth.
