Discovery Communications Acquires Treehugger
Discovery Communications has acquired (via paidContent) Treehugger, a popular green news blog founded by Graham Hill. The blog is currently ranked 19th on Technorati and receives 1.4 million visitors per month. Treehugger will become part of Discovery's Planet Green TV network that will launch in 2008.
Discovery Communications, the number-one nonfiction media company, today announced the acquisition of the leading eco-lifestyle website, TreeHugger.com. The interactive site becomes part of Discovery's global multiplatform initiative Planet Green, which includes the first 24/7 eco-lifestyle TV network launching in 50 million homes in early 2008.
The deal brings TreeHugger.com's rich mix of news, blogs and advice to Planet Green and furthers Discovery's previously announced goal of developing original programming related to the environment, sustainable development, conservation and organic living. In acquiring TreeHugger.com, Discovery is pursuing its multiplatform strategy of being the leading content provider across nonfiction genres around the world. The transaction will not have a material impact on earnings in year one.
Terms were not disclosed but a paidContent post says TreeHugger was acquired for around $15 million. Other sources (see here, here, here and here) have put the acquisition figure at $10 million. Discovery wasn't the only company that had approached the popular green blog. In a post on its site TreeHugger says they were "approached by over 15 large companies" over the past year.
In addition to its blog, TreeHugger also has forums, audio and video podcasts, and owns the Digg-like Hugg.com website. Still $10 to $15 million is very impressive for a blog plus a few extras. It was just a couple years ago that the entire Weblogs, Inc. blog network was sold for about $25 million to AOL. Nick Denton who has not sold his Gawker Media blog network is listed as one of the people on TreeHugger's Board of Advisors.

GigaOm Goes Green
The GigaOm blog network has gone green with its latest blog Earth2Tech. As the name of the blog implies the coverage will be about green technologies and coverage of green business ideas. Om Malik introduced the blog on GigaOm.
We are launching our latest blog - Earth2Tech, a site devoted to the business of clean technologies, its innovations and everything else. While there are many sites that help consumers live "greener," we are focusing our energies on the business of clean and green.
One part clean tech startup coverage - (a quick look at clean tech venture numbers shows the growing ranks of startups in hot areas like solar and biofuels); One part reviews of tech giant's eco-initiatives (is Google's carbon neutral initiative more marketing or responsible plan?); One part a resource page for entrepreneurs and Valley types looking for green tech [tools, rules, tips] - LBS meets ethanol?
A welcome post from the blog's editor Katie Fehrenbacher says it took some time to convice Om Malik to launch the green blog.
It took a bit to convince Om to go GigaGreen - read his rendition here. But if investors and founders like Sunil Paul, and the oft-quoted John Doerr, and Vinod Khosla, are all aiming at energy over IT and the web, then he felt we're in pretty good company. It might be a bubble, even mainstream pubs like NPR and the Economist are now debating that fact. We're agnostic. As always, through bubble or boom we'll keep the same GigaOM skepticism on this new site.
If green is a bubble then we are all in big trouble as anyone following global warming closely should know. However, it is always important to keep a close on eye on which technologies perform as promised and which companies and products are really as green as they claim to be.

Live Earth Sets Streaming Record
NewsFactor reports that the Live Earth concert set a record for simulateneous viewers with 10 million streams.
This past weekend's worldwide Live Earth concert might eventually impact the rising water level caused by melting glaciers, but it has already been a "watershed" for simultaneous video streams.
By Saturday afternoon, MSN said it had set a new record for the "most simultaneous viewers of any online concert ever," with 10 million streams.
The event represents a "milestone in live Internet broadcasting," said Joanne Bradford, MSN chief media officer. She predicted "an even greater number of streams" as viewers return to watch on-demand footage of the performances of about 100 artists, which will be available at LiveEarth.MSN.com for the next several weeks.
The concert can still be watched online at liveearth.msn.com. There are also many clips on YouTube. A Live Earth search on YouTube generates 29,800 results.
It helped drive viewers and blog posts that the global concert had famous artists playing in all seven continents. Even Antarctica was accounted for thanks to Nunatak, British Antarctic Survey's band that played live from Antarctica. As you might expect there have also been a huge number of blog posts about Live Earth. Technorati's index includes over 660,000 Live Earth posts. Some highlights from Live Earth included Al Gore's hologram, Rio de Janeiro's massive crowds, Spinal Tap, Madonna's original Live Earth song "Hey You" and Yusuf singing Peace Train. Idolator and Arjan Writes approved of Kelly Clarkson's performance. Stereogum provides some more highlights in this roundup post.

New Blog Covers Green Celebs
A new blog called Ecorazzi is covering celebrities who are making an effort to heal the planet and fight global warming. The green gossip blog was founded by Michael d'Estries, the Managing Editor of Groovy Green, and Rebecca Carter, who runs the greenerMIAMI blog. The launch of the blog was announced in a recent press release.
"Inspiration to make the world a better place can come from anywhere -- even Leonardo DiCaprio or Woody Harrelson. We decided to create an online space for the public to learn about the environment and humanitarian efforts through the actions of celebrities," said Ecorazzi co-founder Rebecca Carter.
Celebrities often use their time in the public eye to bring awareness to important issues. Ecorazzi exists to highlight the people making this effort for the environment and other causes. At the same time, we get to have fun following celebrity gossip, with a "green" twist!
"There is no doubt that green is hot right now. Hybrids and organic are the 'in thing'," said Ecorazzi co-founder Michael d'Estries. "Celebrities are helping spread the message by incorporating 'green' into their everyday lives and working to help others. By highlighting their efforts, we are hoping to bring the green message to a more mainstream audience."
Rebecca added, "It's also just a great way to have fun. We don't need to take ourselves so seriously all of the time. The environment is an important topic, but let's face it, it can be boring or sometimes even depressing. By taking the topic and mixing it up with celebrity gossip, we're trying to give readers the best of both worlds."
Some of the celebrities covered recently on Ecorazzi include Drew Barrymore, Elizabeth Hurley, Neil Young, George Clooney and Kelly Clarkson.
