Facebook Makes Slight Logo Alteration

Posted on July 1, 2015

Facebook has made a slight change to the look of its logo. The most noticeable difference is in the letter "a," which is rounder than before. The updated font also makes the two letter "o" characters rounder and thinner. The letters themselves are all thinner than with the previous look. The updated logo is pictured above on the right with the previous logo on the left.

The logo change is primarily to improve how the logo looks on mobile devices. Howard Belk, co-chief executive and chief creative officer at Siegel+Gale, told the Wall Street Journal, "This is actually a huge change and it's much more than the 'a.' It's driven by mobile."

Facebook creative director Josh Higgins said in a statement, "Now that we are established, we set out to modernize the logo to make it feel more friendly and approachable."

The new logo does look better, particular with then altered "a." The original logo was created in 2005, long before social media took off and before the film, The Social Network, aired in movie theaters. The Wall Street Journal says the company's "f" favicon logo will not be changing.
