RSS Ads in Boing Boing

Posted on February 6, 2005

Boing Boing, one of the most popular weblogs, has started placing ads in its RSS feed. Ads in RSS feeds are inevitable. As content is dispersed in this new form it makes sense that advertisers and publishers will want to use the format to earn revenues. Decisions will have to made by publishers as to the format of the ads and what ratio of ads to content will be acceptable in feeds. Boing Boing says it is currently limiting the text ads to less than 1/3 of its posts. Boing Boing's ads are short Overture text ads occur within the feed entry itself. Here is more of what Boing Boing said about its advertising experiment: "We're working with Feeburner and Overture on incorporating ads in RSS, and it's an experiment. Most of the time, the ads are contextually related to the entries. We're limiting the placement of the ads so they only appear in fewer than a third of our posts. We'll be fine-tuning the process in the days to come and we appreciate your patience and understanding."
