Horatio SansThere have been rumors that SNL was going to be making changes. Today, Horati Sans blogged (thx Eat the Press) his departure from SNL.
Hi my Dear fans and friends alike,
I have decided to not return to Saturday Night Live this season. I wish the best to everyone at the show and expect them to have a great season. I want to give a big thank you to all my fans for your kind comments and well wishes. I look forward to making you laugh in the future, and hopefully not behind the counter at Burger King. Goodnight my dears!

Jessica-Lee Rose (Lonelygirl15) Appeared in KFC Commercial and Short Film

Silicon Valley Watcher has indentified the mysterious Lonelygirl15 (Bree) as Jessica Rose, an actress from New Zealand. Many have been on to the idea that the popular YouTuber is an actress. You can read more background about her here.

But we think her full name is Jessica-Lee Rose. If you search within the Clyne Management website on Google you will find more information about a Jessica-Lee Rose on this cached page. It lists acting experience including formal training and work experience with a KFC commerican and a short film. Here is an excerpt from the page.
COMMERCIALS
2004 - KFC - Extra

SHORT FILMS
2004 - Dearly Beloved (New Zealand Short Film Academy, Directed by Leah Salvisan) -- Lead (Bride)
Update: Valleywag also has a video of Jessica Rose or Jessica-Lee Rose with her brunette friend. Another blog called Top of the Tube has also posted Rose's resume. The LG15.com website, set up by Tom Foremski at SVW, has the first YouTube video to break the news. And there are more photos of Jessica Rose here on a site set up by YouTube user mgpapas.

Update 9-13-06

Bree update: The New York Times has an article about the reveal of Bree's identity.

The Times' Screen blog also has some information about Lonelygirl15 include a link to this MySpace page.

Chrispian at 451 Press, LLC also provided this link to the lonelygirl15.com web forum where the creators of lonelygirl have already admitted this is a professional production. The ongoing discussion there includes links to more resources.

The good news for Lonelygirl15 fans is that the shows will continue according to an AP story
As far as what happens to Bree next or just how long "Season One" will last, the creators themselves are unsure.

The three are represented by Hollywood talent agency Creative Artists Agency, but say they have no immediate plans to make a Lonelygirl15 movie or TV show.

"We're moving forward and we want to keep doing what we've been doing," Beckett said.
They are all using equipment that anyone could use.
Despite suspicions that the videos were slickly produced, the creators say they use the same tools and resources available to others who regularly post videos on the Web.

The episodes are shot with a $130 Web camera and the lighting is provided by two desk lamps and a window. The sound comes from the Webcam's internal microphone.

"We're fans of this medium," Goodfried said. "It represents a shift from the content being in control of the big corporations to power being in the hands of the little guy who has a Webcam."

"We are the little guys," Beckett said.
That information should be enough to motivate others to attempt their own video fiction.

Update 9-15-06

Jessica Rose Jessica Rose was on MTV yesterday. She told MTV that she has received some positive feedback.
For the aspiring actress, her newfound attention has been all the more coincidental because of her initial reservations about appearing on the show.

"The project was pitched to me as being an Internet story. I was hesitant because [I thought], 'This is weird, this is the Internet. Who's going to watch this?' " Rose admitted. "I just graduated from acting school and my teachers were like, 'Just be careful. People are going to make things sound wonderful to you, and they're really not.' I didn't realize how big the Internet really was."

Just as the creators had hoped, that vast space has been filled with an emerging community dedicated to lonelygirl15. Rose says she's received copious feedback from across cyberspace.

"I've had so many positive e-mails sent to me. People were concerned that I was going to be getting hate mail, which I haven't," she said. "All of their e-mails are like, 'I'm sorry for all the hate mail that you must be getting.' And I'm like, 'I'm not. There's none.' I've had so many positive and lovely messages, so it's been really nice."
A clip from the MTV appearance can be found here on YouTube. YouTube also has lots more if you run a Jessica Rose search.

Gary Brolsma Returns With New Numa Numa

New Numa NumaGary Brolsma has returned to Internet fame with a great new music video called New Numa Numa. The new video, located at the New Numa YouTube channel is produced by Experience Studios (Seattle, WA) and features Gary and his band, The Nowadays, dancing and lip-syncing to music by DJ Variety Beats.

In 2004, Gary Brolsma uploaded a video to the Internet that featured him dancing and lip-syncing to an obscure Romanian pop song. The video was copied on several websites and quickly exploded in popularity leading to press coverage and numerous web parodies. Several newspaper stories (see Wikipedia entry) indicated that Brolsma was unhappy with his Internet fame and all the parodies of his video. However, Brolsma now appears to have embraced his fame and says he was encouraged by people asking him when he would make another video. He has launched a website that contains a link to the New Numa Numa video as well as a contest that will award prizes to the developer of the best New Numa video video. The top prize is worth $45,000. Here is some background from the launch press release.
Just 19 years old when he became a viral video sensation, Brolsma waited months to tell his mother what was going on. Suzanne Brolsma learned of her son's new fame when she came home from work one afternoon to find the phone ringing and her answering machine full of messages from members of the press. The media attention was overwhelming and despite the immense popularity of the video, the Brolsma family never made a cent from Gary's fame. Like many lower-income American families, the Brolsmas struggle daily to make ends meet.

But while Brolsma may have found the press attention daunting, it was the enthusiasm, encouragement and affection of his fellow Internet users that inspired him to return with a new video. "I heard from so many people asking when I would do another video," says Brolsma. "If people can watch this new video, enjoy it and get a laugh out of it, then I'm happy with that."
Brolsma has teamed up with Minneapolis, Minnesota based Jaeter Corporation to promote the website. Brolsma's site includes music downloads, ringtones and t-shirts -- he is ready to earn some cash from his lip-syncing video talents this go around.

The New Numa website also includes a webpage for Dan Balan, the writer/producer of the hit song "Dragostea Din Tei" (also known as "The Numa Numa Song"). The immensly popular song track reached the #1 spot in 32 countries and sold over 12,000,000 units worldwide.

We are fans of Gary Brolsma and Numa Numa and we are glad he had the courage to return to the Internet with a very cool new Numa Numa video.

Katie Couric and Henry Blogg

CBS News has launched a blog called Couric & Co to kick off Katie Couric's debut on CBS News. Her show debuted today. It is also being streamed live online.

Couric and Co

One of Katie Couric's first posts talks about a guy named Henry Blogg she discovered when she searched for the word blog on Google.
A footnote: out of curiosity, I did a little "Googling" for the word "blog." And one of the first entries that popped up was a guy by the name of Henry Blogg. He lived long before the age of the internet. But his story is quite remarkable. He was apparently an accomplished sailor - a legendary lifeboatman, to be exact - who weathered fierce storms while doing his job, rowing out to sea. It took guts - and some muscle - to venture out into the unknown like that.

Reading his story reminded me of some wisdom that was passed on to me when I was deciding whether or not I should come to CBS. I was anxious about making a career change. But a good friend told me: "Katie, a boat is always safe in the harbor. But it's not what it was built for."

She was absolutely right.

And here I am.

Like Henry Blogg, this blog is shoving off from the harbor, and heading out to a mysterious and uncharted sea. The harbor was great. But, let's face it: we're supposed to be exploring the wider world. This is what we were built for. And that's what we'll be doing at "Couric & Co."
The post about lifeboatman Henry Blog has already received over 400 comments so it is fair to say that the Couric & Co. blog is already popular. The blog also includes posts by Couric & Co Editor Greg Kandra.

Barbara Tells Rosie Not to Blog About The View

The ViewRosie made headlines the other day with her blog post that a new promotional image for The View (shown on the right) had been photoshopped. Rosie says she saw the image on drudge, referring to the Drudge Report.
i saw the view black suit photo
on drudge
and i vote yes
it was photo-shopped
look at the amount of white space
between my arm and body
barbara and elisabeth seem to vanish
there in my underarm thin-ness
yes i say
photoshop
People magazine reports that The View host Barbara Walter did not appreciate Rosie's blog post. People also says Barbara Walters doesn't want Rosie to blog about the show.
"I didn't like the blog," Walters tells Newsweek of a post in which O'Donnell complained about a promotional skit for the new season. "I saw the new view promos," O'Donnell wrote on her Web site. "Found myself/ in the position/ I loathe the most/ powerless."

But Walters is hoping O'Donnell will be a team player. "I'm counting on Rosie's intelligence and sensitivity and humor," she tells Newsweek. "This is, after all, an entertainment show. It is based on people who like each other and are having a good time, not on people who are arguing and unhappy."

Soon after Walters spoke to the magazine, she called back to say she'd just received flowers with a card reading, "Barbara, I only want the promos and the show to be great. And I love you. Love, Ro."
It should boost traffic to Rosie's blog, at least temporarily, as people check to see whether or not see is able to keep from blogging about The View.

Pamela Anderson Starts Another Blog

Pamela Anderson PokerPamela Anderson has a new poker site called Pamela Anderson Poker where she also has another blog. The Blogging Times mentions the Pam blog, "Pamela Poker also features a blog written by Pamela herself. She will write about things going on in her life." The blog can be found here. However, it appears to be more content written about Pamela than anything written directly by Pam so far. But it's still a bookmark and must-read for Pamela Anderson fans. The blog reveals that Pamela Anderson was a popular search item in the recent AOL data dump disaster.
A few weeks ago, AOL accidentally released search data from 650,000 customers which revealed Pamela Anderson popularity. While intending to help researchers, AOL instead set off a privacy controversy because some of the users could, in fact, be tracked down.

People that search for Pam Anderson, but prefer to remain anonymous, were faced with the unfortunate reality that big brother (in this case AOL) was in fact logging search patterns and tendencies. At this point its unclear why AOL reported on search tendencies, however, the name Pam Anderson came up as one of the most prominent and searched-for on the internet.
When Pam herself starts blogging at this blog or somewhere else on the poker site this will actually be her third blog. She keeps a diary on her website where she recently posted that she will be blogging on the poker site: "I'm going to start playing and chatting on my site every weekend. Promise!" She also blogged on Friendster in 2005 to promote the Stacked tv show.

New Blog Covers Green Celebs

EcorazziA new blog called Ecorazzi is covering celebrities who are making an effort to heal the planet and fight global warming. The green gossip blog was founded by Michael d'Estries, the Managing Editor of Groovy Green, and Rebecca Carter, who runs the greenerMIAMI blog. The launch of the blog was announced in a recent press release.
"Inspiration to make the world a better place can come from anywhere -- even Leonardo DiCaprio or Woody Harrelson. We decided to create an online space for the public to learn about the environment and humanitarian efforts through the actions of celebrities," said Ecorazzi co-founder Rebecca Carter.

Celebrities often use their time in the public eye to bring awareness to important issues. Ecorazzi exists to highlight the people making this effort for the environment and other causes. At the same time, we get to have fun following celebrity gossip, with a "green" twist!

"There is no doubt that green is hot right now. Hybrids and organic are the 'in thing'," said Ecorazzi co-founder Michael d'Estries. "Celebrities are helping spread the message by incorporating 'green' into their everyday lives and working to help others. By highlighting their efforts, we are hoping to bring the green message to a more mainstream audience."

Rebecca added, "It's also just a great way to have fun. We don't need to take ourselves so seriously all of the time. The environment is an important topic, but let's face it, it can be boring or sometimes even depressing. By taking the topic and mixing it up with celebrity gossip, we're trying to give readers the best of both worlds."
Some of the celebrities covered recently on Ecorazzi include Drew Barrymore, Elizabeth Hurley, Neil Young, George Clooney and Kelly Clarkson.

YouTube Gets in Bed With Paris Hilton

YouTube and Paris HiltonYouTube.com has kicked off a new advertising scheme called Brand Channel. Brand Channels will begin with a Warner Bros. Records promotion for Paris Hilton's new record that includes a Paris Hilton Channel. You can see the first video from the Paris Hilton Channel here. Reuters reports that the Paris Hilton Channel is sponsored by Fox's Prison Break.
YouTube will help drive traffic to the Brand Channels it sells, and the channels might have sponsors, as is the case with the Paris Hilton Channel, sponsored by Fox's "Prison Break."

The second initiative that officially rolls out Tuesday actually began nine days ago and is a platform that YouTube calls participatory video ads (PVAs).

YouTube co-founder and CEO Chad Hurley said the first PVA was for the Weinstein Co.'s current movie release "Pulse." The PVA appeared as a video commercial on the YouTube home page that users could rate, share and comment on -- in other words, do whatever they do with the usual fare they find on the site. The ads also earn "most viewed," "most discussed" and "top favorite" status just as regular YouTube content does.

The "Pulse" ad was viewed 900,000 times in four days, Hurley said. By comparison, all-time YouTube champ "Evolution of Dance" -- a six-minute video from Judson Laipply, a motivational speaker from Cleveland -- boasts 29 million views.
It's about time YouTube came up with a money making plan. They will need it to overcome their high bandwidth bills. The Financial Times is also covering the YouTube Paris Hilton news.

Celebrity Blogging Site Has a Blogmobile

BlogMobileChat With a Star is a celebrity blogging site that currently features blogs by several sports stars. They also claim to have the first BlogMobile. That's a picture of Chat With a Star's mobile blogging rig on the right. And here is a picture of the three guys (Andy Goodwin, Billy Wagner, Burton Rocks) that own the truck.
ChatWithAStar.com is the premier destination for fans to get up close and personal with athletes and entertainers through online interactive chats. The chatwithastar.com website features weblogs and interactive chats by celebrities, beginning with current and former professional athletes, to enable them to tell their stories "in their own words" and interact more intimately with fans.

In addition to chats, www.chatwithastar.com features trivia contests and memorabilia auctions. Among the initial celebrities featured on www.chatwithastar.com are: Billy Wagner of the New York Mets; NFL veteran Kevin Mawae, who has just signed with the Tennessee Titans; New York Yankees announcer John Sterling; Andy North, former pro golfer and commentator for ESPN; boxer Gerry "King of the Left Hook" Cooney; and Pittsburgh Pirate Hall of Fame player and Hall of Fame broadcaster for the New York Mets, Ralph Kiner.
The celebrities blogging on the site are primarily baseball stars so far. There is also one model blogging -- Beverly Johnson. You can see a list of upcoming celebs here. A good question to ask is do the Chat With a Star celebrities blog inside the truck or from the comfort of their own home?

Landis Denies Doping Charges in Blog

Floyd LandisTour de France winner Floyd Landis is using his blog to voice his opinions about the drug charges he now faces. Floyd blogs that he is innocent and will be vindicated.
In the past week, I have gone from the “Top of the World” to the depths of scandal. I have been thrust into the international spotlight and am being asked to defend myself against something that I did not do, for reasons that I do not understand. Although this has been a hard time for my family and me, we are confident that I will be vindicated. I am innocent of any wrongdoing and want to take an opportunity to clear up some misconceptions that exist regarding the situation.

It is widely known that the test in question, given as a urine sample after my victorious ride on stage 17 of the Tour de France, returned an abnormal T/E ratio from the “A” sample. I want to be entirely clear about one point of the test that has not been fairly reported in the press or expressed in any statements made by international or national governing bodies; the T value returned has been determined to be in the normal range. The E value returned was LOW, thus causing the skewed ratio. This evidence supports my assertion that I did not use testosterone to improve my performance. I emphatically deny any claims that I used testosterone to improve my performance.
USA Today has article about Floyd Landis and the charges made by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the World Anti-Doping Agency, that say he used illegal doping products. (via The Blogging Times

Cesar Millan: The Blog Whisperer

Cesar Millan the Dog WhispererCesar Millan has had a blog for the popular The Dog Whisperer show for a while now to discuss dog behavior and his popular television show on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar has really picked up the blogging pace as of late with a slew of posts for July 31st including this post about training dogs humans.
Remember, dog training focuses on getting the dog to respond to human commands. Dog psychology is really training humans to understand how dogs function, communicate, and fulfill their lives without human-created techniques.

A well-trained dog in the sense of traditional dog training doesn’t necessarily make for a balanced dog, any more than a Harvard degree makes for a balanced human being. You can teach almost any dog to sit, come, stay, or heel because most dogs are easily conditioned to respond to commands with positive reinforcement. True understanding of dog psychology results in your dog staying next to you on a walk, even as you pass by another dog, someone riding a bike, or a noisy garbage truck.
Cesar Millan sounds like he is just as effective at training humans online as he is offline. The 7-31-06 posts are new so they don't have many comments yet but in the past posts on the Dog Whisperer blog have received dozens of comments.

Is the Next Martha Stewart a Blogger?

Martha StewartHere is an interesting topic coming out of Day Two of the BlogHer conference. BlogHer co-founder Elisa Camahort asks the question, Is the Next Martha Stewart a Blogger?
When we launched this new site and people started listing their blogs I was blown away by the blogs about cooking and knitting and crafts and gardening and everything else having to do with what goes on inside (and immediately outside) the home. Blogs with huge followings and sense of community; blogs with amazing visuals; blogs that brought back the feeling I had when I first bought my little house...that I wanted to be the next Martha Stewart. (That would be Martha the maker of beautiful things and very good business, of course, not Martha the felon.)

Much as eBay provided a path to profitability for a whole new breed of micro-business owners, blogs have created a similar opportunity. And food and arts & crafts bloggers are leading the way among bloggers who are building businesses.
There are tens of thousands of blogs covering arts, cooking and crafts. The panel included several BlogHers that are using their blogs commercially. The panel included Maggie Mason, author of the Mighty Goods blog; Pim Techamuanvivit, who created the Menu for Hope charity for Kashmiri earthquakes victims; author Gayla Trail who blogs at You Grow Girl; Andrea Scher who sells hand-crafted jewelry and blogs at Superhero Journal; and Marnie MacLean who blogs and also sells knit and crochet patterns.

These BlogHers are just a small sample of the many bloggers who use their blogs to sell items like art, books, crafts and music. We mentioned an interesting artist the other day who is using his blog to sell paintings of tech gadgets. Will the next Martha Stewart be a blogger? It certainly seems possible. Of course, Martha Stewart is launching a social networking site next year. Maybe a blog written by Martha will be included.

John Tucker Must MySpace

John Tucker Must DieJohn Tucker Must Die is a new film from 20th Century Fox about four girls who try to get revenge on womanizing high school stud John Tucker. The film has exceeded expectations at the box office. It almost beat Pirates of the Caribbean for the number two slot Friday night. One reason for the film's strong performance could be the film's marketing campaign which made used of the MySpace URL: http://www.myspace.com/JohnTucker. The MySpace URL was promoted on television advertisements and movie previews.

The MySpace site includes information the film, downloads, photographs and buddy icons. It also includes a basketball schedule that shows John Tucker as the leading scorer in each game. The MySpace site has quickly acquired over 100,000 MySpace friends and the individual profiles for the vengeful girls (Heather, Carrie, Beth and Kate) in the film have also garnered thousands of MySpace friends. It is an interesting way to promote a movie that probably works best for films like this one that target the younger demographic that loves to use social networks. The film is a Fox product and MySpace is owned by Fox so it would have been a huge mistake for Fox not to have promoted this movie on MySpace.

Carson Daly Dips Into YouTube Talent Pool

Brooke Brookers BrodackVariety reports that Carson Daly has dipped into the YouTube talent pool. Daly has signed Brooke "Brookers" Brodack to a development deal making Brodack what Variety calls the first "crossover viral video star."
Carson Daly has signed Brooke "Brookers" Brodack to a talent/development deal, making the 20-year-old the first talent to emerge, in an official capacity, from the online service.

Via his Carson Daly Prods. banner, Daly will work with Brodack on content for TV, Internet and mobile outlets.

Brodack's portfolio of vids range from comedic shorts and parodies to video diaries. Her video "Zuma," a sendup of the widespread musicvideo for "Dragosteta din Tei," by Romanian boy band O-Zone, has been viewed more than 1 million times.

Daly said he became mesmerized by her videos after recently stumbling upon them online.

"The Internet has become a new platform for identifying emerging artists such as Brookers. I hope to give her the opportunity to expose her talent on a much larger scale," he said. While Brodack isn't the first talent to surface from the Web -- MTV star Andy Milonakis got his start with online video sketches -- hers is one of the first deals struck based on YouTube popularity.
You can see Brookers YouTube videos here, her MySpace profile here and her MySpace blog here. Via David Krug at PR Blogging who has cleverly added a YouTube Stars companion blog to his Popcrunch celebrity blog.

Blogging for the Dixie Chicks

Dixie ChicksThe Washington Post has an interesting article (thx The Blogging Journaliist) about Law professor Junichi Semitsu who is spending the summer touring with the Dixie Chicks as the band's official blogger. You can see the blog here. In a recent post Semitsu explained some of the unusual experiences he has had as the band's blogger.
It's hard to choose the most unbelievable or bizarre moment for me during the past two months of following the Dixie Chicks.

Before I started doing this, I would have thought that the very act of spending time with the most successful female band in history would be the most surreal.

But I had no idea I would soon be asked by Marc Anthony to move out of the way for J. Lo at a party also attended by Diddy, Ann Coulter, Paul Simon, and Bill O'Reilly.

Another surreal moment is when I saw myself for a split second on Howard TV (when the Chicks appeared on the Howard Stern show). Or, perhaps, when friends I haven't spoken to since college contacted me after they swore they saw "someone who looked just like me" on Howard TV.
The Dixie Chicks have really turned things around after being dissed by many country music fans for their anti-Bush views. The Dixie Chicks have gotten the last word on their critics with a #1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart for their new album Taking The Long Way. However, they have not relented on their opinion of the Bush administration. Most recently they bashed Bush patriotism.

Anderson Cooper: Anchor, Blogger and Bestseller

Anderson CooperThings are going well for CNN's anchor Anderson Cooper. He has his own show on CNN. His book about his experiences covering Hurricane Katrina and other disasters has hit #1 on the New York Times hardcover nonfiction bestseller list. Anderson Cooper also just landed a big interview with Angelina Jolie that will air next Tuesday on CNN. You can be sure that quotes from this interview will find their way into thousands of "important" gossip blogs. Cooper's daily 360 blog is also popular. It receives dozens of comments each day and has nearly 800 inbound links according to Technorati. Not shabby for a blog that debuted about five months ago.

Artists Blog Responses to Critical Reviews

These days authors and musicians can do something about those critical articles and bad reviews. They can simply respond to the review in a blog or on a social networking site like MySpace.com. Guardian Pop critic Caroline Sullivan recently found this out when singer Lily Allen personally responded to an article she wrote about the young star.
Pop critics are used to dishing it out - criticism, that is - but can we take it? I'm not talking about the feedback received from fans when we write something unflattering about their favourite artist, but facing the wrath of the artist him/herself.

When I reviewed a gig by the much-discussed new singer Lily Allen, I knew that if she read it, she was bound to disagree with the gist of it - which was that at this early stage of her career, she hadn't yet proved that the hype is justified. And she did. She posted a message on her MySpace page after the review ran last month, categorically taking exception to most of the points I'd made. Principally, she argued that having made an album (due for release next month) and received 1.3m MySpace plays, she had proved herself.

Well, we will continue to differ on that, but her post impressed me. Pop stars can be legendarily vituperative (one major indie frontman was so put out by a piece in the NME that he wrote a song just for that particular journalist, entitling it something like You Scum), but Allen, despite her pique, came across as decent and likable. And I began to wonder whether, taking into account that she's 21 and it had been only her second gig, I'd been too hard on her.
You can see Lily Allen's response to the article by Caroline Sullivan here on MySpace. It's a whole new world for critics and performers.

Gawker Defeated In The Battle of Shiloh

Gawker was initially labeled a hero by some bloggers for its refusal to remove from its website a photograph of baby Shiloh taken from the cover of Hello magazine. Gawker was one of the few blogs that continued to run the incendiary baby photo cover, even after receiving threatening letters from Time Warner's lawyers. The blogosphere was properly shocked and awed. Claiming that posting a small thumbnail of the pictures was within the "fair use" exception of copyright law, the site clung firmly to its interpretation of intellectual property law as a bedrock in a stormy sea of imminent litigation.

Alas! Gawker's own attorneys then weighed in on the matter, telling Gawker that while posting a thumbnail of a magazine cover was acceptable, that running the new photos from the inside of the magazine was most definitely not. And with that bit of devastating friendly fire, The Battle of Shiloh was lost.
And while we will gladly look at the pictures, coo like idiots, and then link to places where they can be found, we just can't post them. We can and will stand on our fair-use high horse all we want about a thumbnail pic of the Hello! cover (which, per our original offer to Time Inc. counsel Nick Jollypants, we have now changed to the People cover), but we really can't use the same justification for the fuzzy, cloying photos floating around from Hello!. Sorry - but this time, turns out that posting the pics actually is illegal. Or so we're told. Our lawyer could just be drunk and not wanting to deal. Whatever. We're still working through the first round of legal woes from 2 days ago, and we can’t even keep track of what we are and aren't allowed to do anymore.
The Battle of Shiloh is over, but it will never be forgotten.

Time Warner Lawyers Threaten Bloggers Over Shiloh Photo

The Pleasant Morning Buzz reports on the controversy over the Shiloh photo. Shiloh is Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's new baby for those who don't keep up with celebrity baby gossip. Many celebrity gossip blogs had been running a baby photo of Shiloh from the cover of Hello! Magazine before Time Warner fired off threatening letters to bloggers.
As you might recall, People magazine bid $4.1 million for the U.S. rights to the photos and in Hello! paid $3.5 million for the U.K. rights. Because Time Warner owns People, it had its attorneys threaten everyone who posted the pictures. As a result, everyone took them down, except Gawker. They're hanging tough and as of this afternoon, they are still online with a working server. But we'll see if Time Warner accosts a federal judge during the middle of cocktail hour and convinces him to sign a TRO.
Gawker believes the image is small enough for qualify as fair use.
As we were informed by Time Inc. counsel Nick Jollymore (cute!), by posting the Hello! cover, Gawker was infringing on People's very exclusive, very expensive U.S. rights to the baby pictures. We think it’s small enough to fall under fair use, and we'd gladly replace the Hello! cover with a People one featuring the baby, but no dice. And so Time Inc. continues on its counseled quest, creating almost enough fun to distract everyone from their more dismal problems.
Most bloggers have complied with Time Warner's demands and have taken down the Shiloh photo. Some have replaced Shiloh's photo with a photograph of Angelina Jolie as a baby. Gawker is getting support from bloggers for refusing to remove the pictures -- see here and here.

Mamarazzi is a new blog devoted entirely to making fun of celebrity parents and those crazy things they do "because celebrity parenting is so easy to snark." It was born to the Blogosphere on April 30th and is the brainchild of several seasoned mommybloggers: Angie from Home Grown, Lisa from Nihaus, Lucinda from Suburban Turmoil, M'Kay from Petroville, Poppy from The Opiate of the Masses, and Susie from The Underpaid Kept Woman.

PopSugar Founders Plan Blog Network

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Lisa and Brian Sugar, the husband and wife blogging team at PopSugar, are planning to build a network of twelve sites covering topics like fitness, parenting and pets. PopSugar is a celebrity gossip site.
According to Sugar, the site has 6.4 million page views and 2.9 million unique users per month, based on Google Analytics and StatCounter, two statistical tracking programs.

Its popularity has grown so rapidly that the Sugars plan to launch 12 sites covering topics from fitness to parenting to pets. They've hired seven employees and are hiring six more. By the end of the year, they will have an editorial staff of 25 with salaries ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 and plan to move the operations from their Victorian home in Pacific Heights to offices in downtown San Francisco.

The Sugars have funded their company, Sugar Publishing, with $250,000 of their own money but plan to bring in private investors to cover the remaining costs to launch the sites, which will feature a variety of videocasts and podcasts.

To follow her passion of tracking the latest TomKat, Brangelina and Hilton sister high jinks, Lisa Sugar gave up her job at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners as an advertising media planner in November.
The article says the company will be called Sugar Publishing. It says Lisa and Brian Sugar started the company with $250,000 and plan to raise more money through private investors.

Did Bloggers Hurt Mission: Impossible III's Box Office Numbers?

Mission Impossible 3Melissa P. McNamara, the author of CBS News' Blogophile column, writes about some bloggers that organized boycotts of the new Tom Cruise movie, Mission: Impossible III. She raises the question, "Did bloggers hurt the box office debut of "Mission: Impossible III"?
Nicole Kidman may still love Tom Cruise, but the same can't be said of some bloggers. "Mission: Impossible III" debuted with $48.025 million, well below industry expectations and almost $10 million lower than the franchise's previous installment, according to studio estimates. Industry analysts had expected the movie to open in the range of "Mission: Impossible II," which debuted with $57.8 million in 2000, and "War of the Worlds," which premiered with $64.9 million over the July 4 weekend last year.
Some bloggers, including gossip blogger Periz Hilton, definitely tried to hurt Tom's box office numbers. Perez encouraged readers of his blog to see Hoot instead. Andrew Sullivan encouraged a boycott because Tom Cruise, a scientologist, encouraged Viacom to pull the South Park scientology episode. Tom Cruise denies doing this. Tom's recent antics like his couch jumping and his attacks on Brooke Shields haven't helped his popularity.

The Blogophile piece also mentions a few other bloggers boycotting Cruise including The Last Reel and Voxpolix. A quick Technorati search brings up other blogging boycotters.

Some bloggers went to see the movie for director J.J. Abrams and loved it -- despite not caring much for Tom Cruise. PopSugar also liked the film and says Mission Accomplished. Even if bloggers did manage to deflate the U.S. numbers a bit TomKat's film still made a staggering $70 million in Europe.

Thomas Dolby Blogs and Tours

Thomas Dolby BlogSynthopia reports that five-time Grammy winner Thomas Dolby recently started a blog. The blog includes anecdotes from Dolby about his new tour called the Sole Inhabitant Tour.
"In 2006, the new horizon for music is the Internet. And I don't mean MP3 piracy, which is old news by now. It's taken a long time to arrive, but I feel the true Internet music revolution is finally upon us. I'm talking about musicians having the ability to reach out to their fans and make music in close to real time, in their own back room, while never having to put themselves in hock to large corporations."

"I believe we're about to enter a fascinating new era for musicians and music fans, and I want a front row seat. So I’m putting my enterpreneurial activities behind me, and going back on the road. This is just the first step - before embarking on new songs I'm feeling a strong need to reconnect with my original music and my core fans, who (unbelievably!) have never stopped arguing about my songs and lyrics, even with the total dearth of fresh material. Certain music has the ability to become part of the fabric of your life, and it’s something you never outgrow. This tour will be a way for me, as well as the audiences, to rekindle the old excitement. Getting road-ready is a complicated process, but it's fun as hell. I'll be recording some of the process here on my blog. Hope you enjoy it!"
Some of the things Dolby has blogged about include his tour, tech equipment for musicians, his trench coat and some cool goggles he bought on eBay. He has mentioned the K-Fed copyright incident as well.

Clooney Suggests Flooding Gawker Stalker With Fake Celeb Sightings

Page Six reports George Clooney has an idea that will make Gawker Stalker less effective at providing recent celebrity sightings. His idea is simply to flood the site with fake celebrity sightings.
"There is a simple way to render these guys useless," Clooney advised in an e-mail his publicist sent out to various other show-business publicists. "Flood their Web site with bogus sightings. Get your clients to get 10 friends to text in fake sightings of any number of stars. A couple hundred conflicting sightings and this Web site is worthless. No need to try to create new laws to restrict free speech. Just make them useless. That's the fun of it. And then sit back and enjoy the ride. Thanks, George."
Gawker said they were so excited that Clooney had come up with the idea. Other sites like Pop Sugar agreed that it would be great if Clooney noticed them no matter what the reason was. Young Manhattanite provided a list of fake celebrity sightings they had submitted to Gawker Stalker. FakeHandbags tells George Clooney to relax. Still more discussion of Clooney's idea to overwhelm Gawker Stalker with made-up celebrity sightings can be found on Pop Candy, The Flack and We Love Celebs.

Gawker's Stalker Maps

We've posted before about the blogarazzi and it looks like they are here for real now with Gawker's launch of Gawker Stalker maps. Gawker Stalker allows anyone to submit celebrity sightings. Gawker posts the details about each of the submitted sightings. They also pinpoint the locations on a map using technology from Google Maps and Wists. Celebrity seekers can also use it to find out where celebrities are and then try and find them.

US Weekly's blog (yes US Weekly is blogging too) explains Gawker's new celeb tracking tool.
In the name of privacy and completely invading it comes Gawker Stalker Maps! Brought to you from gawker.com, the site has people send in celebrity sightings which are then posted immediately on a map. So basically, if you have no shame or conscience whatsoever, you can pinpoint the location of a celeb and then go follow them around like a lovestruck teenager.
Blogebrity points out that the service is just for New York celebrity tracking: "Looks like Stalk-tastic fun for New Yorkers. Sadly, those of us on the left coast are stuck in the dark ages of celebrity tracking until Defamer launches its own PrivacyWatch map."

K-Fed Has More MySpace Friends Than Chris Pirillo

Chris Pirillo, a blogger, technologist and founder and publisher of LockerGnome.com, has joined MySpace.com. His new MySpace site can be found here. So far Chris Pirillo has quickly amassed 32 friends. Meanwhile, Kevin Federline (also known as K-Fed), has over 30,000 "friends" on his MySpace.com site. However, Federline started his MySpace account earlier and is married to pop star Britney Spears so he has an unfair advantage. Britney just put K-Fed on a budget so this might make him less popular. Pirillo's MySpace site is definitely a lot easier to read than the garbled nonsense present on K-Fed's site. As of this writing, neither K-Fed or Chris Pirillo are using the MySpace blog section -- this is typical of most MySpace users.

George Clooney Says Arianna Huffington Threatened Him

Yesterday, George Clooney said in a statement that he did not write the blog post that the Huffington Post posted on Monday. Arianna Huffington wrote an explanation on the Huffington Post saying she got permission from a PR rep working on Clooney's Good Night and Good Luck film to cobble together a Clooney blog post using old interview quotes from Larry King Live and the Guardian. Now, New York Daily News journalist Lloyd Grove says George Clooney told him Arianna threatened him over the blog post.
"She said some things that I won't share, but she did tell me that this could be bad for me -- bad for my career. Well, screw you!" the movie star told me yesterday about a conversation he had with the doyenne of Huffingtonpost.com. "I'm not going to be threatened by Arianna Huffington!"

Clooney, in his only interview on the subject, took off the gloves in his fight with Huffington over a blog purportedly written by the "Syriana" Oscar-winner and posted on her Web site Monday.

"I feel abused," he said.
Grove says he saw the emails from one of Clooney's PR reps that granted Huffington the permission to use the quotes.
But Huffington insisted (and forwarded me E-mails that seemed to back her up) that she believed she had explicit permission from one of Clooney's PR reps to publish his disparate quotes as a single piece of writing. "This was a misunderstanding," she told me yesterday, as the disputed blog was removed from her Web site.

Clooney told me: "Nobody has ever written an op-ed piece for me. If I say I've written something, I've written it. When I go to the Oscars, I write everything I say...I stand by what I do, but I'm very cautious not to take giant steps onto soapboxes because I think they're polarizing."

Clooney said that when he demanded a disclaimer from Huffington, she refused. "She told me that it's a big no-no in the blogosphere, where people are supposed to write their own pieces."
People are supposed to write their own blog posts but not everyone does as this blog debacle has made very clear. Clooney's blog post was here but it has since been removed. It can still be found here on Technorati.

Even Pro Wrestlers Blog

Foley is BlogThree-time WWE Champion Mick Foley has a blog called Foley is Blog. It is unclear why the blog is named "Foley is Blog." An interview in the Pro Wrestling Insider says Foley doesn't even like the name blog. He will only call it a weblog. Most people would probably be too afraid to argue with him.
Foley says that Todd knows the name. Todd says he is trying to let Foley get all the glory. Todd says the choices were "Foley's Hardcore Diary" which Foley liked but no one else liked. Todd says they chose "Foley is Blog." Foley says it's a rib on him because he hates the word "blog." He refuses to call it a blog, instead calling it a web log. He said he had two conditions. He said he would do one in Afghanistan on a one time basis, but he ended up doing three. They were pretty lengthy pieces and he wrote for 6-7 hours on the way back from there. He was really into writing, but there would be long stretches of time when he wouldn't write anything. So this kind of forces him to do something every week and it would be something he would enjoy and hopefully fans will enjoy. So he refuses to call it a blog and if they wanted to put up his column, they would have to decipher it from his handwriting. He fed-exed them 16 pages about Stacy and said "good luck with it."
In addition to blogging Foley is also the author of a novel called Scooter. Avoidinglife.com has found more wrestling blogs. For more pro wrestling scoop you can also try the Wrestling Blog.

Dave Barry Explains Blogging

Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Dave Barry explains to Newsweek the difference between doing his print column and blogging.
You have a blog now. How is that different from your print column?

Let's just take a theoretical example. Let's say a toilet explodes somewhere in Wales. Now in the old days, if a toilet were to explode in Wales, it would run first in a Welsh newspaper, some reader there might see it, clip it out, mail it to his friend in Boston. His friend might say: "Oh, Dave Barry might be interested in this," and send it to me. And weeks could elapse before the world knew about that exploding toilet in Wales. Now thanks to the miracle of the Internet, everybody can read the Welsh newspaper story as soon as it's printed, and I get 6,000 links of it, and I put it up on my blog [blogs.herald.com/dave_barrys_blog] and the whole world is alerted to the danger of the exploding toilet in a matter of minutes sometimes. So if you don't think that's progress, then God help you.
Sounds like progress to us. Barry is currently promoting his new book Dave Barry's Money Secrets: Like: Why Is There a Giant Eyeball on the Dollar? (Crown). His blog can be found here. (via Readers Read)

Blogs Cover Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Film Festival is becoming a blog fest according to a Reuters article (on News.com) that reports on some of the blog coverage.
"Blogs are becoming a vital part of an independent film scene that relies on word-of-mouth and alternative media to truly thrive," says Eugene Hernandez, editor of the pioneering indie film site IndieWire.com, which hosts some two dozen blogs and this year has asked 12 filmmakers from Sundance and the concurrent Slamdance to blog about their experiences.

BloggingSundance.com, a pioneering festival blog, was dreamed up by the founder of the Weblogs Inc. Network, Jason Calacanis, who persuaded the festival to let him blog in 2003. "I blogged live from inside movie theaters. I'd sit in the back row with my laptop," he recalls. "It's the closest thing to live coverage." Film fanatic Calacanis continued to blog Sundance through 2004 and '05, when he reviewed 19 to 20 movies by himself. "When I'm at Sundance I don't go to parties, I watch films," he says.
The article focuses on Sundance blogging from IndieWire.com and Weblogs Inc.'s Cinematical. Other blogs mentioned include the Hot Blog from Movie City News, Defamer and Hollywood Elsewhere. These blogs are providing a significant amount of Sundance coverage but they aren't they only blogs covering Sundance.

Graphs from Technorati or BlogPulse show the predictable burst in Sundance blog coverage. Technorati tags can be found here and there are 19,800+ english language posts containing the keyword Sundance. BlogPulse shows over 12,400 results and IceRocket.com has listed over 27,000 posts. • Star Jones Starts Blogging

Star Jones BlogStar Jones, one of the hosts of the View, has started a blog called Shine on AOL's Journals. It looks like Star's blog has been subjected to same banner ads that other AOL Journals' bloggers complained about last year. Star begins her blog with Star's Rules -- which lay down the law for would-be commenters.
First, since you know who I am but I don't know who you are, I insist that you play fair. I don't do insults, mean-spirited comments or undue nastiness. If that's your thing...do it somewhere else. I will debate and discuss an issue with you but anything that falls under the category of pure hateration will just be deleted from my blog.

Please remember not to post on my blog in all caps; it's equivalent to screaming at someone. I'm new at this, but even I know that...so act like you know.

Try to keep track of the conversation. No reason to repeat what's already been said.

Don't use foul language; that will get you nowhere. If you're upset about something, please keep it clean. Otherwise your post will be deleted and I certainly won't respond.
That sounds fair. We would have to agree with the no all caps -- no shouting rule. Star sounds like she will be one tough moderator. TV Squad points out that the blog coincides with her upcoming book tour for her new book called Shine: A Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Journey to Finding Love. We have added Star's blog to our list of celebrity blogs.

Update: 1-10-06: Pleasant Morning Buzz and Just Jared have more on Star's blogging.

Media Spotlight for Ana Marie Cox After Wonkette Exit

Ana Marie Cox Blog PostsAna Marie Cox is getting a great deal of coverage from the mainstream media and the blogosphere after deciding to step down from Wonkette and work on her career as a novelist. There are 270+ stories on Google News and hundreds of blog posts in the past few days as the Technorati graph on the right indicates.

In an excerpt from a Time magazine interview Ana Marie Cox says she stepped down because two years of full-time blogging at Wonkette felt like an eternity.
GG: You've stepped down from being Wonkette. Why?

AMC: Well, I had been doing it for two years, which is an eternity in blogtime. And I have a contract to write another book. It seemed like a good time to let someone else not wear the pants.

    GG: How did Wonkette start?

AMC: I had had my own blog, where I entertained a couple dozen friends and enemies that bothered to read it. I wrote some about politics. Then, an eccentric British guy named Nick Denton, who has a kind of blog empire, decided that he wanted to add a D.C. outpost to his holdings. He looked around for someone in Washington. I think the pool of people who were willing not to take either themselves or the city very seriously was pretty small. So I got the job.

GG: How would you describe your mission with the blog?

AMC: I usually describe it as throwing spitballs. Washington is a lot like high school, and they were missing a class clown, I guess.
Ana Marie Cox's first novel, Dog Days, is in stores now. The Baltimore Sun says Cox has already signed a second book deal for a nonfiction book with Riverhead Books. Taking Cox's place at Wonkette.com will be David Lat, the laywer who used to secretly write the Underneath Their Robes blog. Ana Marie Cox does have a blog of her own but it hasn't been updated since September.

Many of the people are thanking Kevin for the "free ad" in their MySpace postings so they may be more interested in exposure than friendship. Federline is using MySpace to promote his new rap album. His song called "PopoZao" has been played over 31,000 times on MySpace.com. MySpace is known for promoting music and recently launched its own music label. Celebrities Also Used to Promote Blogs in Japan

Actress and celebrity Kaori Manabe, who has a popular blog called Koko dake no hanashi, is heading a new committee that will promote blogging in Japan. A Mainichi Daily News article says Kaori Manabe is a celebrity blogger in Japan where she is known as the "blog queen."
Celebrity Kaori Manabe appeared in Tokyo on Monday to officially launch a blog promotion committee aimed at increasing the number of people who write blogs on the Internet.

"There may be a lot of people who read blogs, but there aren't too many people who have their own ones," said Manabe, who appeared in a suit and wore glasses. "I want to spread them much more."

The committee was launched with support from major Japanese Internet provider Nifty, with the aim of promoting the correct use of blogs and increasing the number of users. Manabe will serve as head of the committee.
The Raw Feed says Manabe was also recently named the head of Computer Associates' Spyware Extermination Squad. Celebrity blogs are also being used increasingly here in the U.S. to promote blogs and services like the launch of Elisha Cuthbert's blog on the NHL website. Some examples can be found here in a recent post.

Celebrity Blogs Used to Promote Networks and Services

Celebrity blogs seem to be launching with increasing frequency as we head into the last month and a half of 2005. But these are not stand alone blogs. They are attached to a new service or blog network launch. They are part of the launch promotion or they are added to give the network of blogs a traffic boost. The latest blog is Flea's blog (via Blog Herald) on the NBA's Blog Squad website from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Blog Squad also includes a few other celebrity bloggers including actor Victor Williams (King of Queens) and Eric Millegan an actor on Bones. You can see the full Blog Squad list here.

  • Censored Gawker Blogs to Run on Yahoo News

Yahoo has cut a content deal with Gawker Media to feature posts from Gawker blogs starting with these five: Gawker, Wonkette, Gizmodo, Defamer and Lifehacker. ClickZ has an article with information about Yahoo's profanity filter:
"We've said all along, we're always going to rely on the content we get from our partners," said Yahoo! spokesman Brian Nelson.

Nelson added Gawker's content, frequently laced with profanities, will pass through a language filter before appearing on the news portal. "The content isn't for everyone... Of course, all of it will be in line with our editorial policies," he said. "There won't be profanity running on our site."
The HuffPo already has a similar content deal with Yahoo (see here). PaidContent reported the Yahoo-Gawker news but even they didn't know the financial terms of the deal.
Eventually, the other Gawker blogs will be included and the distribution will spread to other Yahoo sites. For instance, Defamer will show up on Yahoo Entertainment. Terms aren't being disclosed but a lot of emphasis is placed on the amount of traffic Yahoo can drive back to Gawker Media.
A lot of bloggers are commenting on the Yahoo-Gawker deal.

  • Olga Voropaeva notes the Yahoo language filter: "Yahoo spokesman Brian Nelson said Gawker's content will pass through a language filter to eliminate profanity before being republished."
  • Business Blog Consulting reports that Yahoo's stock price climbed on the news of the deal.
  • PerezHilton blogged that Gawker sold out in a confusing post. See Gawker for their not been sold post.
  • Blogebrity has a round-up of pithy posts.
  • Read/WriteWeb posts a screenshot and links to other blogs discussing the news.
  • Shore.com calls Nick Denton savvy: "Gawker's moves tend to emphasize this analogy, with Denton acting as the savvy agent for his stable of independent properties to get them the best individual deals in the best venues. Kudos to Nick Denton for cutting an attractive licensing deal that maintains the position of his properties on the Web while offering them a powerful marketing channel via a leading portal. 'Tis the way to do it..."

Some of the blog posts are already live on Yahoo as seen on these pages: Gawker on Yahoo, Defamer on Yahoo, Gizmodo on Yahoo, Lifehacker on Yahoo and Wonkette on Yahoo.

  • Elisha Cuthbert Blogs for the NHL

The NHL is trying to lure hockey fans to NHL.com with a new blog by actress Elisha Cuthbert called Hollywood Hockey Thoughts. Cuthbert's latest post was about superstition in sports and she wasted no time in stepping into the blogging and journalism debate.
Where along the way did they discover these habits? Like putting their left side equipment on first or not shaving or showering. I would not be surprised if it went even beyond that. I guarantee they're dragging their wives into this whole thing too. I'm going to ask them the next time I see them!!!

Look at me I'm slowly turning into a reporter! LOL
We would give you a permalink but the Cuthbert blog has none to give. Deadspin said she has been posting regularly so far: "No, seriously. She's even blogging pretty regularly; she launched four days ago, and she already has three posts." Off Wing Opinion blogged that Cuthbert was an odd choice:
But the oddest choice among the league's official bloggers is actress Elisha Cuthbert of 24 and The Girl Next Door. Ok, she's Canadian (has the NHL made it a mission to find every Canadian ex-pat living in Hollywood?) and she's easy on the eyes, but come on.

Then again if they gave her a video blog...

    Colb-Blog: The Colbert Nation Blog

There is blog for the Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert's new show on Comedy Central. The Colbert Report is a spin-off from the popular Daily Show hosted by John Stewart. The blog called the Colb-Blog is technically a character blog because it is a fan blog written by a fictitious fan of the Colbert Report. That fan is Avery Gordon, "an American hero who not only 'gets it' but also understands that web commerce generated through use of a public personality's image must result in full compensation for that personality." Despite being a character blog the Colb-Blog works because it is very funny and it provides a good summary of each night's show. Unfortunately, there are no permalinks on the blog yet so you can't link directly to individual posts.

Hilary Duff's Blog Launches on AOL Red

Hilary Duff, the actress and singer, has launched a blog on AOL Red, AOL's Internet service for teens. Hilary is blogging about her appearances at shows, traveling and shopping in cities like Paris and New York. In one post she blogs about long flights without Internet access.
I have been overseas doing promotional press and performances of Wake Up which is coming out in the UK on October 24th. America got it first, and now it's spreading overseas. My first stop was France where it was rainy and kind of cold. The travel time was long because we stopped in Frankfurt so that we could fly Lufthansa because they provide Internet on their international flights. It's hard to go very long without internet access! Don't you agree?
We agree as do probably most of the tweens and teens reading Hilary's blog. There are permalinks on the blog but they are pointless -- they just forward you back to the front of Hilary's blog. As of this writing you need an AOL account to access AOL Red, which is where Hilary's blog lives. Teens can also create their own blogs on AOL's Red service. Some of the fan and gossip blogs are covering Hilary Duff's new blog here, here, and here. An article in the National Ledger says Hilary Duff is "super busy" but was still able to make time for the blog on AOL.

Alec Baldwin has started a blog on the Huffington Post. He joins dozens of other journalists and celebs that have blogs on the HuffPo. Here is a complete list of HuffPo's bloggers. Baldwin's first post, What Happened to the Party of Lincoln, has already received over 270 comments. The Huffington Post has destroyed all critics that thought it would fail. That massive blog does not currently show up in the Technorati 100 but if it did the HuffPo, with over 7,700 inbound links, would rank sixth just been Gizmodo. (Via Daily Blabber)

Most Bloggers Don't Blog to Become Famous

Wayne Hurlbert, the blogger of Blog Business World, has an article on Webpronews.com about blogging for celebrity. Wayne says most bloggers are not blogging to become famous and that many non-bloggers have a misconception that people are blogging for fame.
The idea that is circulating, and usually among those who have little or no concept of blogging, is people blog to become famous. The possibility could be true in many cases, as some bloggers do set out intentionally to blog for fame. It could even be argued that business people blog for that reason. If the goal is to spread the word about their business, then at least becoming better known is the motivation.

That said, fame is not likely the main driving force for most bloggers to set fingers to keyboard. Bloggers write to express themselves, and very often to extremely limited audiences. By the way, if you are one of those unfortunates, we should talk; or at least read my blog on a more regular basis.
Studies like AOL's Blog Trends Survey which found that over half of all bloggers surveyed agreed that blogging served as a "form of self-therapy" would back up the idea that most bloggers are just blogging because they just have something to say or because it makes them feel better. Another survey found that 36% blog because they like to write and 14% blog just because "it's fun."
Blogs and bloggers are so diversified, in their countless motivations and goals, that it's literally impossible to pigeonhole the reasons for starting a blog. With literally millions of blogs on the internet, similarity of thought and ideas went out of the window long ago. There are as many classifications of blogs, topics, and themes as there are numbers of blogs. It's a bit like counting grains of sand on a beach.

I'm sure that a search for bloggers who seek only fame, would turn up many examples. The opposite case is also true. A similar search for bloggers who go out of their way to avoid publicity for their blogs, beyond a select circle of readers, would also find large numbers.
There are blogs about an enormous variety of subjects and there are bloggers who pursue popularity and those who do not. The misconception by non-bloggers may come from the louder fame-seeking bloggers that boast of their earnings and inbound links. However, there are many more bloggers who quietly blog away about their life or a particular subject. The social networks are also full of bloggers that just use the blog and photograph tools to share photos and stories with friends.
